Our Consultant Leon Lurie has an interest in Roman history.
In November last year he was successful in applying to excavate for two separate fortnights at the site of the Vindolanda Roman Fort in April and September 2023. The Vindolanda Fort is a short distance from Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. Vindolanda is a World Heritage Site and attracts excavation volunteers from all over the world each year.
For the past six months our intrepid Leon has been deep in Roman history relating to Vindolanda, the construction of Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman writing tablets discovered at Vindolanda in the 1970’s. In fact the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the writing tablets took place with a commemorative site tour at Vindolanda on Thursday 23rd March 2023.
In addition during the past four months, Leon has been participating in several weekly Pilates and Circuit Training sessions and in addition a personal fitness regime overseen by his instructor Olly Johnson of Beverley. Leon says Olly is a hard taskmaster but at almost 83 his fitness has increased dramatically. He hopes that this will greatly assist with his excavation work at Vindolanda.
We will provide further updates as to Leon’s progress.
